The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is the largest student run engineering competition in Canada. Dating back to 1975, this adaptation of the American Concrete Canoe Race brings together over 450+ engineering students from universities and technical institutions across Canada. These students will be given the opportunity to apply and develop their skills in design, technical writing, networking, and management.
Competing teams will descend upon Waterloo in January 2018 to carry on the GNCTR tradition of teamwork, sportsmanship, school spirit, and innovation.
Competitors will be asked to design and build a toboggan which can safely carry five passengers. All toboggans must consist of an entirely concrete running surface, a structural frame, a braking system, and a functional steering system, all while weighing less than 350lbs.
Teams will be judged on a number on categories including concrete mix design, frame design, steering, braking, a technical report, race day speed, and school spirit. Teams will not be allowed to compete if their toboggans do not meet the safety and technical guidelines.
Without corporate sponsors like yourself, hosting an event like GNCTR 2018 would not be possible. Please take the time to review our sponsorship package - we look forward to hearing from you!
The official rules for GNCTR 2018 are now available for download at your convenience! We've pushed to get this document in your hands earlier to give teams a jump start on their design. All teams should read the rules in full to ensure your design meets the necessary criteria for this year's competition.
The GNCTR 2018 Organizing Committee reserves the right to add, remove, or modify the competition rules at any point in order to maintain the spirit of the competition and ensure the safety of all competitors. Should the competition rules be modified in any way, addendums will be issued to all registered teams and posted here.
RFI RESPONSE PACKAGES
Responses to questions emailed by each team will be posted publically in the form of Request for Information Response Packages, provided the question response would have some value to all teams. Please see the links below to RFI responses:

Additionally, in an attempt to try minimize unloading delays during the competition, we are looking for the best crate designs from past GNCTRs. Any teams willing to share their previous years crate construction drawing should email it to firstname.lastname@example.org. The organizing committee will aim to post a small selection of the designs to share with other teams for their potential use.
Please stay tuned for upcoming information regarding toboggan shipping!
The GNCTR 2018 Organizing Committee has arranged for a group event flight discount with WestJet! WestJet is offering 10% off Econo Fares and 15% off Plus Fares to GNCTR 2018 participants flying into one of Toronto Pearson International Airport, Kitchener-Waterloo Regional Airport, or Hamilton International Airport from anywhere in North America. To qualify, flights must occur between January 17th, 2018 and February 4th, 2018. Flights can be booked anytime up to the competition for this offer to be valid. Please use the following discount code for booking flights: OZBPYAN.
As noted in the registration package, due to the limited flights to Kitchener-Waterloo Regional Airport the organizing committee will be providing buses for any teams flying into Toronto Pearson on Wednesday, January 24th and departing Toronto Pearson on Sunday, January 28th. We would greatly appreciate if all flying teams attempt to travel via WestJet to limit bus coordination between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 in Toronto.
Please email email@example.com with your itinerary once your team have booked flights.
